While rain threatened to dampen the proceedings the 82nd Academy Awards began brilliantly as veteran actors and new hopefuls alike descended on the red carpet of the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood to find out who would be lucky enough to win a prestigious Oscar trophy.
Sandra Bullock successfully shook off her rom-com moniker (and yesterday's Worst Actress Razzie Award) with a convincing Best Actress win for her starring role in affecting true-life drama The Blind Side. After praising her fellow category nominees, Bullock eventually broke down into tears when thanking her mum for her support.
As widely predicted Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for his acclaimed role as a down-and-out country singer in Crazy Heart, and history was made when The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow was announced as the Best Director winner, making her the first ever woman to collect an Oscar in this category. Her triumph was cemented with the movie winning the Best Film accolade.
Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG award-winner Mo'Nique was a clear favourite to win an Oscar, and she did indeed walk away with a trophy for Best Supporting Actress for portrayal of an abusive mother in the hard-hitting drama Precious.
The Best Supporting Actor accolade went to Austrian actor Christoph Waltz for his role as a Nazi officer in Quentin Tarantino\'s quirky WWII film Inglourious Basterds, and finally the Oscar for Best Costume Design went to previous winner, British hopeful Sandy Powell for her work on The Young Victoria.
