Experts Advise on Healthy Relationships

Panel to advise on classroom education

Wales Education Secretary Kirsty Williams has called on experts to advise on healthy relationships in the school curriculum.

A panel will provide advice and support on issues relating to the delivery of healthy relationships education within the curriculum. This includes improving young people's understanding of LGBT issues, violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence, respect and consent, sexism and bullying.

Emma Renold, Professor of childhood studies at Cardiff University's School of Social Sciences has agreed to chair the Group.

Welsh Lib Dem Spokesperson for Equalities and Young People, Cadan ap Tomos, said: "Healthy relationships is a necessary part of a modern, inclusive curriculum, and I'm proud that it is Welsh Lib Dem Education Secretary Kirsty Williams who has started this vital discussion. I'm particularly pleased that the voice of pupils will be at the heart of this process.

"Education must be about preparing our young people for the future, and healthy relationships is an integral part of creating well-rounded citizens. By educating children about relationships in an appropriate way, we can help them to make informed choices in their personal lives.

"This is about enabling children to develop healthy attitudes towards relationships and instilling the importance of being respectful of others, as they grow and discover their identity. "
