Subjects make top 200 in new league table
Swansea University has been recognised as one of the world’s top 200 institutions in the world by the QS World University Subject Rankings.
The 2013 QS World University Rankings by Subject published today show that Swansea University has improved its ranking in Engineering – Civil and Structural, Engineering – Mechanical and Geography. Last year Law made it into the top 200 as well.
Pro Vice- Chancellor Hilary Lappin-Scott said: " To be in the top 200 institutions in the world in one subject area is very good news but to have had four subject areas in the top 200 since 2012 is outstanding.
"The improvements in these subject areas is just reward for the hard work which has been put into improving our standing in the world.
"The rankings are a recognisable measure of our performance, reputation and the excellence of the experience which we provide to our students.
"They show that as an ambitious, research-led institution with top quality teaching, Swansea is an excellent place to study for UK, EU and international students. It all shows that Swansea is a University on the way up.”
Swansea University’s improvement in the subject world rankings follows on from the good news last year that the University had retained its place in the world’s top 5% of universities in the overall QS World University Rankings 2012/13.
The recently published Complete University Guide 2014, which ranks 124 UK higher education institutions, showed that Swansea has made it into the top 20 in the UK for 12 of its subjects, including nursing, engineering, American studies, social policy and medical technology.
The University has also been working hard to boost students’ job prospects, by launching the Swansea Employability Academy.
This has borne fruit as the University moved up 11 places in the table for graduate job prospects. Overall the Guide showed that Swansea University is ranked with other leading research universities across the UK.
Other evidence paints a similar picture. The University rose 12 places in the 2013 Sunday Times' University Guide, was were awarded a 5 star rating for teaching quality by the QS Stars global university ratings system, and we were recently ranked among the World's Top 500 universities.
