Laila Morse, 72, is set to reprise her role as the feisty character and reunite with granddaughter Kat.
One fan tweeted: "Can't wait to see you back in @bbceastenders."
Fans were equally thrilled about the return of Kat (Jessie Wallace).
One fan wrote: "When will you be back on our screens?" while another added: "Your excellent performances have been missed."
A source told The Sun Online that Laila would "be back on screen soon" alongside Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Jean Slater, played by Gillian Wright.
Last year it was confirmed fan favourites Kat and Jean Slater will be back in Walford alongside a new family member.
The trio are back to look after a distressed Stacey Fowler, played by Lacey Turner, as she continues her bitter custody battle with husband Martin Fowler.
Laila first appeared in EastEnders in 2000 and left in 2012 but has made several appearances since.
She also competed in I'm A Celebrity in 2013, but was the second participant to be booted off the show.
One past character who won't be returning yet is Shane Richie, who plays loveable Alfie Moon.
However, he recently admitted he was "itching" to make a return to the soap.
Prompted by his on-screen wife Kat's return to the show, he said: "At the moment there's no plans.
"So it's just trying to find out schedules on what EastEnders have got planned for me.
"I spoke to Jake Wood [Max Branning] and Perry Fenwick [Billy Mitchell] a couple of weeks ago and I've got all my mates there so I'm kind of itching to go back myself...if the storyline is right."
Laila is the sister of British actor Gary Oldman.
He recently won a Golden Globe for playing Winston Churchill in last year's Darkest Hour, and has been nominated in the Best Actor category for this year's Oscars.
